Meet Edison James
"Buck" Owen
How it all started.
Our story begins in the 1930s, when Edison James Owen, our great-grandfather, moved his family to Livingston and opened Owen Mattress Company on South Washington. Edison built mattresses by hand and, over the next decade, expanded into selling both new and used furniture to serve local families. From the very beginning, the goal was simple: provide honest products, fair prices, and dependable service to neighbors he knew by name.
In 1951, Edison’s son and our grandfather James “Buck” Owen carried that vision forward by building a new store, Owen Furniture Company, next to the old Fain Theatre on East Polk Street. Buck wasn’t just a business owner; he was deeply invested in the town he called home. He served in the Lions Club, sat on the Livingston ISD School Board, coached little league baseball, served his country during World War II, and spent his free time hunting and fishing. His values — service, integrity, and community — became the foundation of the business.
Meet “Jimmy” and “Sue”
The next generation.
The next chapter began in 1973, when Buck’s son, James “Jimmy” Owen Jr., returned to Livingston after graduating from Sam Houston State University and working in Houston. Jimmy purchased Hennington Electric, selling appliances and air conditioning from its location on North Washington. Shortly after, he combined Owen Furniture Company and Hennington Electric into a single operation, expanding what the store could offer local families.
In 1974, the business moved to its current home on Business 59 South, where Owen Furniture Company continues to serve Livingston and surrounding communities today. In 1976, Jimmy married Sue Atchley Owen and she later joined the business. In 1985, flooring was added, allowing customers to outfit their entire home, from furniture and appliances to flooring all under one roof.
Generations Working Side by Side
Today, Jimmy and Sue Owen still own and operate Owen Furniture Company. Through the years, they’ve remained actively involved in the community, supporting local organizations and building relationships that extend far beyond the showroom floor.
Our family quite literally grew up in the store. Many of our memories were made right here playing among furniture displays, learning the value of hard work, and watching firsthand what it means to serve people well.
While Jill now resides in the Houston area with her daughter, Emma, the next generation has returned home. Tanner and I moved back to Livingston in 2016 with our children, Harper and Owen, with plans to continue the family legacy that began nearly 100 years ago.
You’ll still find three generations in the store working together every day, greeting customers, answering questions, and making sure each person who walks through the door feels welcome.
